Keep digging?

What is this?? I found this in a hole then after finding it the pinpointer kept going off. It was too deep to dig the other thing because it was at this point 10-12 inches down. Should I dig the rest out?

Might be some early 1900s machine type thingy.. looks like it attached to something and rotate kinda like a gear perhaps? i don't know for what though if it is that..

In my early days of digging, I tried to open a hole on a dry, hot day and gave up, only to have my hunting partner come along and finish what I started. He got a civil war artillery shell. So, how lucky do you feel.:occasion14:

See I usually keep going but this site is EXTREMELY rocky and is purely red clay. Thats hard to dig through lol
