"KARENS"

These are the kinds of things I was asking about (before the thread got 'jacked).

Now I'm feeling paranoid again.... 😱

I can see now why some detectorists travel in packs, and I've seen at least one "packing" on YT. 😲
YT is a poor example of reality.
Some pack because where they detect-but seeing the degradation of the nation it's justified.
(disclaimer) I'm truly a lone wolf in life-I enjoy my own company-not intimidated by 2 or 4 legged creatures.

In detecting the urban for 35+, and the private for a 15+yrs with cross over years.
The interactions that were negative, the urban has a list, even a few private permissions.
That this pales to the endless list of great memories one gets.

If a interaction occurs, each time one has to think on their feet on how to react-listen to what is being said-and reply with an honest fact based answer.

If one is trespassing, detecting on protected lands, or against a city/county law banning detecting-well wear it and one deserves the wrath of the giver.

Like everyone else, at least most of us, I try keep aware of my surroundings, try to. I have had my share of "characters" over the years, some good, some "interesting", some? not so good. There are some places that I DO pack a .38 with me, hopefully as a "deterrent", was almost "Detector" jacked one time, and I am not going to be a victim. I wish I had the contacts to work only on private property, but I don't. I like BLM land, being by myself, but body parts do not work as well as I would like, to hike out there. So... often parks and schools. One thing I do, that has helped, in my pouch in a small plastic bag, I carry a few live rounds of ammo that I have dug in both parks and school grounds. Good for "show & tell", people and or maint. people for the grounds often are suprised, and then wish me luck in finding something good.

Nothing will draw attention to you faster than carrying a weapon while detecting, especially if you're detecting a ballfield or school. Leave the mohaska at home. If the neighborhood you're detecting is that rough, find another place to detect.

In the example I was thinking of, the detectorist was (as far as anyone could tell) alone, in a remote wilderness location, with a fairly high-end machine.

As far as schoolyards, playgrounds, etc., the only ones likely to conceal anything I'd be interested in (and I can't think of any ATM) would be defunct.

If I have to worry about carrying a firearm to pursue a hobby that does not involve firearms, I think I might move on to another item on my B-List...

I do not carry at a school or ballpark, give me a little credit there Tim, I DO use common sense. I am not Macho Man, and it IS concealed, I just will not be anybody's victim. I could go on, but there is no point.

Then you should stay out of the wilderness.

Then you should stay out of the wilderness.

I disagree. I believe that carrying a side arm when in the wilderness is a wise thing to do, especially when you're detecting.

When you're detecting you're also bending down or kneeling to dig targets, and to a predator that makes you look like prey. In addition, if you're wearing headphones and focused on digging that target, then you are clueless as to what is coming up behind you.

Never heard of bears stalking humans, but cougar's and drug crazed bad-guys sure do. There's plenty of both in the hills around Grants Pass.

If I'm traveling to a new area I've not detected before, I stop at the police station or sheriff's office and introduce myself, show them my ID (driver's license and retired military ID), let them know I'll be detecting and ask if they have any ordinances against it. They usually don't and commonly make the comment to not leave any holes. In essence, I take the initiative and if anyone calls to report me they already know who I am and what I'm doing. It works well for me.

I always carry when detecting, the only time I do not carry is if I am at the beach and will be in the water deeper than thigh deep, I do not carry on school grounds, otherwise, I am armed when detecting, in fact I am armed 99.8-99.9% no matter where I am, if I can legally carry where I am then I am armed.

Bears will stalk humans, so will coyotes, wild hogs, wild dogs, bobcats, and idiots! If it is a legal place to carry, I carry. I also hunt a lot of woods/forest areas and do not want to be mauled/bitten by any wild animal. I do not worry about people bothering me. If I am going to city/county parks wear a yellow or orange safety vest and BB Cap. Then they think you work there. I will never be a sheep, I will aways be prepared and trained to care for myself and my family anyplace anytime.

Whenever you're detecting a public park it always feels like you're in a zoo. Every time I go out hunting there are always people who stop dead in their tracks and stare at me, lots of people point and talk "OMG HE'S METAL DETECTING" and act like it's such a huge deal.
One time I was detecting a neighborhood park and some woman came up to me and started taking pictures.
And it's almost a guarantee if you go out anywhere at least 5 people are gonna ask you "Looking for pirate treasure?" or "Find any gold?".

I get that people are curious but I wanna enjoy myself, not deal with people every 3 minutes.

I have an old woman who comes to the park whenever I’m detecting.
Drives her car as close as possible, writes down my vehicle license, etc.
I only use a screwdriver to dig, in that park. I pick up trash and don’t detect around the equipment if any children are present.
Next time I plan to photograph her and her license plate. I can’t see how it would be illegal. However, by definition, I suppose it’s assault, if she says I made her afraid.
I think she made you afraid.
Better yet, have an old previously dug ring or brooch and wave her over, hand it to her ask what she thinks let her have it.

The experiences i mentioned are the only 'Bad" ones i have had in 15 or so years metal detecting. Better than %95 of the time people and their pets are friendly, just curious and are only looking for someone to have a casual conversation with while enjoying their day/stroll.

She's running your plate, those cougars do that I heard.🤣

Big headphones are great, can hear them Yak off, yet one can pretend not to hear them at all.

Some people live their life in fear and some people fear no one. I'm not afraid to go metal detecting anywhere in my area. Must be a terrible thing to live your life in fear...

No Tim, I do not live my life in fear, I'm 71, I live my life with experience and common sense.
