I had dug a small homestead on my property in Botetourt county, Virginia and stumbled across this brass relic. When I had first discovered it I though it was just a broken women's broach or other assorted decorative material and added it to my clothing items/brass pile. Every time I looked back at it I thought it looked familiar, so I started to do some research on infantry bugle insignias. At first, my search was very shallow and I did not find anything, so I put it away for about three years. Over this Christmas holiday I decided to continue my search and finally found a 100 percent match! It is indeed a broken false-embroidered infantry bugle insignia! I was amazed by this discovery because no civil war activity had occurred on my property to my knowledge. Probably a veteran returning from the war and lost later on. For some background, these types of insignia were hand made and purchased by officers who could not afford the expensive, real embroidery, hence the name false embroidered. Really goes to show that hard work and persistence really does pay off!
