Finding silver always makes for a great day,WTG, CONGRATS.

i want to clean it a bit first and then ill try to post some pics. its in good condition though appart from some crustation!

i was just starting to get a bit disheartened but this is unbelievable!

Firstly check that it not a contemporary forgery (lots were made of this issue).

However if real its a rare find even in the UK & at the time was a huge amount of money. 12 pennies to the Shilling, therefore 36 Pence. 1 penny would buy a number of things. As there were 4 farthings to the Penny. ie it was worth 144 farthings!

Pictures please?

This may well deserve the banner!! 8) 8)

I have yet to find one, although I have 2 Eighteenpence type tokens from the same period.

This was at a time when they were so short of silver they were circulating Spanish silver coins with countermarked Kings heads on them. George III head was stamped on the neck of Carolus IIII. They said at the time its the 'head of an mad man on the neck of a fool'

Yeah, we definately need a pic. How'm I gonna drool without a pic ??

Congrats on your first silver Shaun. Way to break into the silver club with an 1800's coin 8)

thanks everyone
i still havnt put it down ;D

ive tried cleaning gently with a toothbrush but its still black-blue does this mean its a forgery or is there another method of cleaning?
i may have to email the pics to somebody if i could!

Color sounds good, more expected for silver than a metal a counterfeiter would use.

I may be the only other person on this forum who has found one of these. It definitely meets the requirement of being a large silver.

Personally, as its such a great find specially being your first I would avoid cleaning it any further. It sounds real. If your desperate use some lemon juice for 1 minute, rub off with a soft towel & rinse with water. Repeat as nessessary.

If its black and blue looking it is probably silver. That is tarnish and sometimes the tarnish or patina can affect the value of a old coin.Have you ever seen a silver coin with a rainbow patina, I think it adds numismatic value to the coin. Don` t clean it I think that subtracts from the value. Just rinse with warm water and gently clean it with your fingers

its still in my hand and i dont think ill try to clean it any more!
funny thing is just as i was having doubts about my new detector i found this, but i didnt even need to dig it was laying on top

Your machine is fine, do as per my PM & keep posting the results. Its good to have another UKer onboard Tnet.

Happy Hunting

Nice one Shaun, you can make a very good electrolysis silver coin cleaner using an old phone charger. I posted how to do this on the coin cleaning section of the forum a while back. This method works every time with silver coins.

Regards Robert.

Terrific find! WTG!

Looks real enough.

Have you got a macro function on your camera (read the instructions & try for another picture)?
