Hello again from the ash and dust filled crater! :) Don and I went probing for another privy and came across one near an old garage. The home dates to the 1880's. Saw a depression in the ground and then probed it and hit some layers and glass. Every two feet or so there was a clay cap and then ash and use layers too.

So we started off with the Greene's Sarsparilla and continued on with a few more medicines. Most were non embossed >:( but we kept going deeper and deeper. So after a decent clay cap at around 4 feet we started seeing some nice candy dishes and some more medicines. Then we hit a great use layer and found some more Sarsparilla's. Finally broke into the last use layer and located the cache of bottles and glass :o....Found paydirt with the Dr. Kilmer's Ocean Weed Heart Remedy and a Dr. D Jayne's Expectorant. Nice Aqua glass. Then located some nice amber bottles like the Paines Celery Compound and a few others. Never saw a Millikens Stove Polish before so that was cool.

Then the coolest find of all surfaced. A pair of home made Brass Knuckles. I think they are lead. I can just think that some guy smacked the teeth out of some dude and then got rid of the evidence ;D Knuckles from the 1800's now that is crazy. All in all we had a blast and got mighty dirty because the soil is so dry its like moon dust. Grabbed up a few keepers along the way and found another pit right next to this one that will have to wait until the next PIT DIG....Be safe out there and I hope you don't get overloaded with all the pics I took. jgas

Congrats they are great ,esp like the Dr .Kings New Discovery for Consumption ..that one and Ocean Weed Heart Remedy :laughing7: are interesting and unique . Rare ??? :dontknow:

I love seeing your post. You did well in that hole and the next one might even be older if that one was full. I miss digging the bottle pits. Nice finds all of them. Each one was a miracle cure of the day

Wow, nice finds! :hello2: Man, you guys dig deep. :o Why would folks throw away unbroken candy dishes? :icon_scratch:

Keep digging!

sweet glass i am drooling!!!! MR TUFF

Thanks for the replies guys and gals. I hope the next one is deeper which would usually mean older stuff. Becky, we find the pits with probes, maps and research and of course alot of shovel action :tongue3: People threw away all kinds of stuff back then and they had no trash pickup. They burned the stuff that could be burnt and threw the glass in the privy! Crazy huh? Not too crazy to dig though

sarsaparrilla bottle :o
incredible post!

Jgas,

Those are some awesome digs. :icon_thumleft:

Those old lead knuckles are unique in their own way.

Keep safe

Man, that is just too cool. My parents own some older rental properties. I wonder if one of them has a privy hole like this. :icon_scratch:

Terrific old bottles , I think a lot of them are circa 1870's--1880's - Absolutely beautiful !!!

This is why we dig! Of course, I haven't had the success you've had, but that's why we keep looking! Great!
