So dad got a call yesterday about a guy that was wanting to sell an axe. So he went and checked it out and this is what he brought home. We're normally about a county or two north of the really big axe country, but this is the largest one I've seen found here. This axe measures around 13" long x 7-1/2" tall x 4" thick. Total weight is about 21.6 lbs! This is one of the largest axes I have seen and only rarely do they exceed 20 lbs. This probably one of the largest recovered in Illinois. To top it off it's pretty well made. The flanges are well defined and it has a good overall style. There is some of the original rock surface left in a few places but they worked around it nicely.
As I mentioned I live about 2 counties north of the real monster axe area. In Muscatine County, Iowa there were 3 axes found on a site located at the sewage treatment site. The total weight of those axes exceeded 80 lbs and one of them was broke! A little farther to the south in Louisa County is where Doc. Savage's briefcase axe was found. I believe it weighs over 26 lbs. Although some examples of monster axes are around they are still very rare. The use for them is somewhat unknown. Theories have suggested they might have been used for ice breaking as they are often found in slough areas. Perino mentioned, one time, that they might be used for driving lodge poles as a large axe was found at the bottom of a post mold.
