Yeah, it doesn't appear to be a clothes button with that type of shank.

That is strange, I found it at a local Elementary school. Of course before a school was there there was an old house and prior to that a civil war battle took place there. I keep hoping to find a CW relic because I know others have, I knew this wasn't one but I knew it wasn't a button either. Thanks everyone.

Saddle stud.

Used as decoration as well as function. ties two pieces of leather loosly together so that they move creating less discomfort for the rider as well as the horse.
