Re: gpmorgan

Lines from an old folk song:

"J.P.'s daughter said "Before I die,
"Just two things I want to try.

"Morgan said: "Tell me daughter,
"What can they be?

"A glass of water and a cup of tea."

He was among the steel, railroad and finance "robber barons" of the time that the anti-trust laws were formed to stifle.

could be a gift for opening a new account or safe-deposit box
The date is probably@1928-1938,as Henry Moganthou was the secretary of treasury about that time.
His name is on some of my currency from that era

Hey Charlie,

I thought that was Johnny Cash in Rock Island Line: "Hot cup of Coffee and a Cold glass of Tea"

Are you anywhere near Lodi? I know some grape growers up there.

About 60 miles. We kept a boat at Sampson S.P. for a couple years before moving it to Cayuga. The family was spread through all around the Finger Lakes: Ithaca/Sempronius/Dryden/Auburn.

Wonder if Jughead's Sub Shop is still at Lodi? Mmmmmm.

it is not a ledger or book, ten bundles of money inside that box and 100 pcs each bundle.

source : http://www.tomchao.com/na/us12.html there is a pic of a real one on this site.

This 100,000 Dollar Gold Certificate is the highest U. S. denomination. Only 42,000 were printed. They were used only for transactions between the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department. These notes were never issued for public circulation. When the Government stopped using them in the early 1960s, most were destroyed.

Only three are known to have survived. One is housed at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, one at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and one at the Smithsonian Institute.

It's illegal for a private person to own one of these notes, and none has ever been in private hands. All 42,000 were accounted for. However, I have come across several poor quality counterfeits. They seem to be originated from Asia. So if you happen to have one in your position, I can assure you that it's a fake.

You should still have them checked out by an expert, but it's not looking good for them being real. Are there other types of bills as well or are they all the same?

From everything I can find I'm going to say they are forgeries. Now having said that, they may still have some value depending on when they were made. If they are modern, not much other than as a collectible reproduction. Maybe a buck or two.

Old counterfeits are highly collectible, and sometimes bring a fair amount. My father bought a few of the US and British bills that were forged in Germany during the 2cd world war, and those bring a high dollar simply because of the history involved.

You should send one off to an expert to be authenticated, keep in mind though it is illegal to have one if you are a united states citizen

More Info

They no longer make 10000 dollar bills. They made them from 1865 to 1945.

As for who is on the bill... Andrew Jackson and Salmon P. Chase have been featured over the years. The first gold certificates (1865) had no portrait. There was a vignette titled "E Pluribus Unum", which consisted of an eagle and a shield, on the right. Then, in 1870, gold certificates (made all the way up to 1917 or so, consisting of series 1870, 1875, 1882, 1888, and 1900) had Andrew Jackson.

There was a Legal Tender Note from 1878 which also had Jackson on it. This bill was not redeemable in gold.

Finally, in 1918, a Federal Reserve Note was introduced, that had Salmon P. Chase on it. Salmon P. Chase was the Secretary of the Treasury during the Civil War. His portrait has appeared on several bills over the years, including an $1 from 1862, when he was very much alive and in office!

In 1928, a smaller-size $10000 design was introduced, which also had Salmon P. Chase on it. Federal Reserve Notes and Gold Certificates of series 1928 and 1934 were produced in small quantities.

There are about 350 outstanding 10000 dollar bills today. The vast majority are series 1934 Federal Reserve Notes, and all but about 10 or so are either 1928 or 1934 FRNs. The oldest known is an 1882 gold certificate, and there are several 1918 FRNs, and some of the small-size gold certificates. Mosts of these are in museums. The rest have been redeemed and destroyed.

There are also several hundred cancelled $10000 gold certificates from the series of 1900. These are not part of the above population count, as they had been recalled and cancelled, and are thus no longer obligations of the federal government. They are out there as a result of a fire in the treasury building in 1936, at which point a box full of these ended up in the street! They are worth far less than 10000 dollars, actually, as a collector's item, as opposed to the 350 detailed above, which are worth at least the face value, and probably many times more.

The $100,000 dollar bill is actually not a dollar bill at all, it's a gold certificate. What's a gold certificate? Well a gold certificate is money that the government prints that only they can own and use. It is intended for only the use in Fiscal Channels. They were never issued or used for general circulation. This specific gold certificate was printed in 1934 and has the 28th president, Woodrow Wilson's portrait on it. There were only 42,000 $100,000 dollar certificates printed and the only ones around today are not for sale and are used for educational purposes only. The few remaining undestroyed $100,000 certificates are institutionalized today and may be seen only in some museums.

There were only 42,000 made.
