The band that recorded this song in 1961 was not CCR, but Tommy Fogerty & The Blue Velvets. John Fogerty founded the Blue Velvets as an 8th grader after meeting Doug Clifford and then recruiting Stu Cook to play piano. Although John sang a few tunes, The Blue Velvets were primarily an instrumental band, covering tunes by Duane Eddy, Link Wray, Freddy King, The Ventures, and others. In 1959, when they were 14, they backed up James Powell, a black R&B singer, on a recording of the doo-wop song "Beverly Angel". The song was recorded at Coast Recorders, a small studio in San Francisco.
