My picture of the back has what appears to be a yellow sticky on it. It covers part of it and being so dark, I couldn't tell anything.

I still don't see the materials listed. Help me. ;D

Sorry Daryl!
Yes, that pic is bad. the back is plain. will post a new pick later. that label is my "clip it" trash. sorry about it.
going out dirt fishing now! Same place. wish me luck.
1:30 pm japan time here now. Golden week too. 5 days off! wife and kids gone for today. yipee.
copper / lead I think. Im not a metallurgist or whatever they call them. I dont test metal. not enough experience to say what it is. I think copper / lead????
Also, sorry again! I posted the material on the "todays finds" area. sorry. Forgot to re post.

PIPPIN!
that is so close!
Thank you so much for posting that. It is almost exact from what I can see. Maybe so.....Cop Button!

No problem. I just couldn't see anything.

You don't have to be a metal expert to tell the type of metal. You can usually tell by the patina. I am not familiar at all with the types of metal and alloys they use in Japan. To me, it doesn't seem to have any oxidation or patina. A black color here usually indicates silver but this guy is really black and even. If you can find a place on the back by the shaft that you really can't see well, you might try to take a needle and see if the "color" comes off. It might also help to drop the button on a hard surface. If it is lead, it will "thunk" if it is a "hard" metal alloy it will ring. Worth a shot??

It's a neat button and is really different from what we find here. Enameled maybe??

I like it.

oh..i was being paranoid..lol
stayed up too late is my excuse...

i have been involved in military collecting for a few years...
i wouldn't worry about the patina...the japanese were masters of artificial patina's...and camoflage...one must look close at any japanese material prior to WWII.

i am unfamiliar on how to mark the thread solved... :tongue3:

someone will show up soon and help.

Well I guess I'm the "Dude" that is concerned with patina. I'll have to dig my heels in on this one. Patina is one of your best indicators of a number of things and if you ignore it you can either miss an ID or get ripped off if you buy or trade something. As one of less than 10 jewelers in the US that make Japanese Mokume gane, I am EXTREMELY familiar with the patination techniques used by the Japanese. They are indeed masters but knowing if the patina on a piece you find is natural or man-made is something you should not ignore if you want to totally understand the piece.
