Found this in the backyard of a house built in the 1840's. Definitely gold plated. But I believe it's ivory. It passed the hot needle test. Not leaving a mark or creating a burning hair smell (bone)

What do you think. And what age could be placed on this? It still needs cleaned up a little better but I don't see any markings on the back

I believe that the older ivory(at least the ivory that has been handled very much) yellows somewhat with age.... but no matter what it is made of, it is a beautiful cameo, congrats on the spectacular find.[/QUOTE

Ivory does yellow with age if it is correctly stored and it also needs to be hydrated once a year to keep it from drying out. Hence the mineral oil

I have to stop at the jewler tomorrow to cash in on the gold ring I found today also(another thread). So I will ask their opinion too

Can't wait to get an answer. Gold can be bought anywhere but I'm keeping the cameo

I would keep both pieces, gold value, you never know, it could skyrocket, That cameo is stunningly beautiful, I would never part with it.
Congrats, your finding nice stuff.

How much does the jeweler pay for gold?

How much does the jeweler pay for gold?

Usually around 10% under scrap value

They are a pretty good place to go. I took a 10k 9 gram (after minus the stone weight) class ring to my normal jewler and they offered $50. The new place that I go to paid $137 And scrap value was around $155. So they pay pretty high

Look at it with a good magnifying glass,if its ivory it will have growth layers similar to the rings of a tree.

Ok. Now adding soapstone to the mix. How to tell the difference ?

Thanks

Bob

Hey Turbo, old ivory (salvaged from old pianos) happens to be the material I use most in my art (a mixed-media, minimalist/abstract kind'a thing). I've seen lots of faux ivory and bone as well but always reject it in favor of ivory, which can be quite colorful, especially where it is thicker. One of the best ways to tell if it's ivory is to use a loop to see if it shows any rings, sort of like the cross-section of a tree, though sometimes they look more like fingerprints to me. If you've got that on both sides, even faintly, then you've almost certainly got real ivory. Be careful with it, though, as it can be quite brittle. The rosy tone of this particular cameo looks quite consistent with what I have seen with the ivory I work with, and of course you've got the age of it pointing in that direction, too. Whatever the case, though, a most excellent find! :occasion14:

I just used the clip on macro lens for my iPhone to take some pics and wanted to share what I see In person

Are these the growth rings you guys are talking about with real ivory? You can't get a closer pic than that lol

that lens is awesome! I didn't know they made those

I use it to take pics of coral in my reef tank. You have to get within an inch of the lens but it works great. And right around $10 on eBay

That's a great price for someone local.

It is sort of a chain place called treasure hunt. They have a few stores in the pittsburgh area. They also sell coins at a pretty decent price. I have picked up some Morgans for a decent price
