Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

in honor of my 2000th post --heres a "odd ball" contest -- visit your local area coin shop or shops -- check their "rejects" box -- the 10 for a buck or so called "junk coins" box --- "save" it from junk box hell -- it doesn't have to be pretty -- we're after these queen victora coins -- (farthing ,half penny or penny)-- post a photo of it. the prizes are as follows -- for the oldest coin found --- a young head queen victoria 1888 farthing -- for the most coins found --- a old head queen victoria 1897 farthing --- for the best looking coin ---a 1901 old head queen victoria half penny -- these coins are not of great money value -- it just a "fun" type contest to see what interesting coins are laying about in the scrap boxes at your various coin dealers --- contest runs thru midnight of the 22nd of september 2007 --(by the way all the prizes were once "junk box" coins)-- good luck -- Ivan

Hello again--

Ivan pm'd me earlier and told me that I was runner-up in his 2000th post contest. I can't say that I'm deserving, but really appreciate the gesture. Thanks Ivan!!

Here are some of the other "British" finds I've made over the years at the site where I found the Victoria 3 Pence. (Kirk you'll be happy to know they were found with a White's Spectrum.) Still investigating what was actually at the site, but most of the coins found are from the 1860's and before. I've also included a Canadian bank token found at the site.

Ivan, thanks for giving Tchaire Runner Up, he really deserved it!

Tcharire, nice colection of British coins you got there and all found with a White's. The Dude Kid will be very proud of you! Did you read that Kirk?
Happy Hunting all and may all your coins be wilver.

I'm sorry I didn't see this topic until today. I'll still run over to Brighton Coin in a day or two and have a look at their junk box, even though the contest is over.

I would love to find more coins with HRM Vickie on them. My first big coin find of this year had 'er gracing it.

Re: Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

Hey guys and gals ::)

Thanks..... well done tchaire, those are great coins.... that token is strange being so clear on one side and bad on the other.... was it because of the way in which it was found ??? Also love the Cartwheels..... I had a nice specimen of the 2 penny cartwheel a few years back, but sold it due to lack of funds (bad days back then) I am looking into getting another one soon as they are great coins for a conversation piece.... You could kill somebody with them by throwing it at them ;D

Lets not stop posting the coins as they are great and of a great erra, lets see what is out there.

God bless
Peter

Re: Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

Thanks Peter...

I don't know what to attribute the difference in clarity of sides of the bank token, but I've found a few other coins at this site that are like that. I know it's been a plowed field for many years...Can natural events (soil, chemicals, weather conditions) cause a coin to become this way over time or was it this way when it was lost(and why)? I've also found a few American coins at this site that have holes drilled in them so who knows....My guess is that it was like that when it was dropped.

You're right about the size of the Cartwheels....You definitely know when you run your detector across one of them!!

two things that I can think of the weather could effect the toof the coiun and felterizer from the ground could have cause the bottom to get ate up as it layed there --- don'y know which one ---if it was the topside that was bad weather I'd say weather---if bottom ---fert in the soil (acids) as it layed in contant with the soil --if it was buried deep god know's know they used to put copper coins in rose beds to keep bugs out --my wife has a copper based spray she uses to keep bugs off her roses....Ivan

Ivan I hope the wife's spray is not made from Victorian penny's ;D

God bless
Peter
