Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

in honor of my 2000th post --heres a "odd ball" contest -- visit your local area coin shop or shops -- check their "rejects" box -- the 10 for a buck or so called "junk coins" box --- "save" it from junk box hell -- it doesn't have to be pretty -- we're after these queen victora coins -- (farthing ,half penny or penny)-- post a photo of it. the prizes are as follows -- for the oldest coin found --- a young head queen victoria 1888 farthing -- for the most coins found --- a old head queen victoria 1897 farthing --- for the best looking coin ---a 1901 old head queen victoria half penny -- these coins are not of great money value -- it just a "fun" type contest to see what interesting coins are laying about in the scrap boxes at your various coin dealers --- contest runs thru midnight of the 22nd of september 2007 --(by the way all the prizes were once "junk box" coins)-- good luck -- Ivan

Sounds like a good time! I am not sure if there are any coin shops close but I will look for one. :)

Hello Ivan,

I found this coin in a odd ball basket of coins.... bought it for 10c South African currency. It is a victorian 1896 penny, 1 year out of the date stated ;D

Re: Ivan's 2000th post "scrap box hunt" queen victoria coin hunt contest*

good going your the first poster --since "south africa" was a part of the british empire many years ago its not surprizing you would find "british money" there since south africa in those days would have used british money --- the prize coins were the "dates listed" not "target" dates to find--- 1888 farthing w/ the young head queen victoria== 1897 farthing w/ the old head queen victoria and a 1901 half penny w/ the old head queen victoria --- *any farthing, half penny or penny of any date from any place can enter so long as queen victoria is on the coin ----- as a independant country you now use the rand correct? Ivan

Re: Ivan's 2000th post "scrap box hunt" queen victoria coin hunt contest*

Hello Ivan,

You are correct, we do use the rand,,,, umm not with the old Mother on it though ;D There was a very big influence in this country of the British, and not a good record ::) But oh I forgot, I was born in Britain and I am a good influence :o ;D
I have other coins bought from the odds and ends basket but not too sure what coins they are, I love coins..... What we do is lay all the coins out on the table, and then pick them up one by one and pray for that country..... it is amazing what a person can also learn just from looking at a coin, I guess stamps also, but hey stamps dont have the feel off good metal ;)

God bless

Re: Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

It is very sad as the Victorian times in coinage where some of the best times. I thought that you would of gotten more entries than just me ??? I am very sorry, but please do not give up my friend.

God bless
Peter

Re: Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

??? Only one entry and Peter wins all. Congrats Peter and Congrats Ivan for having the contest. I have no coin dealers around me or I would have given Peter a run for the money! But thank you for the chance to partisapate anyways! HH all

Re: Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

Thanx for the reply DesertFox, this is the first competition that I have seen on the site that has only had one entry ??? Not sure why that is, unless Victorian coins are rare in the USA ???
I love the Victorian coins, and would of loved to have seen some from other countries.

God bless
Peter

Ivan--

Hadn't paid much attention to this post (no coin shops around here) until last night...
I know this doesn't qualify for your contest, but found the following Victoria 3 pence (I think?) in a farm field in West Central Minnesota. Has a "ding" all the way across the back that actually dented it, but fun to find none-the-less. Have pulled out a few British "cartwheel" coins from the same site, but this is my first Victoria. Don't know if they were of much use to the settlers by the time they reached this part of the country, but I'm sure glad they held on to them. (So I could find them 150 years later.)

Re: Ivan's 2000th post - queen victoria coin hunt contest* peter wins all of em

Peter, you won fair and square. We do have a few old English coins around this side of the pond but as far as Queen Victoria or later coins, well we have had our own mints since the mid to early 18th century. Therefore no need to use English money any more.

Ivan: Thanks for the offer of runner-up but I think that Tchaire deservrs it much more than I do. I tried to PM you right back when I got your response but the Tnet went into slow mode on me and after 45 miutes I gave up! HH my friend and I hope you have another contest soon!
