Measures 16 mm across, can make out AUGUSTUS......(something) with a head shot of some corpulant leader. Can't be as old as the Augustus' of Rome, would have V instead of U in name, I think?

Other side has what looks like a crown on top of a coat of arms that has a bird of some type in the lower right hand corner. Tried scanning and enlarging, ended up taking photos for better detail. Anyone have idea what it is??

Thanks

Need better pics. They're too small. It's an intriguing one, though. Very interesting.

If you take more pics, put a penny next to it for scale, too.

Yar, it's a 1752 Szelag Kuronny of Poland, King August(us) III known as "Augustus the Corpulent" or August the Saxon (originally from Saxony)

Man, this is fun!

Aha. I was wondering if it might be Polish or East Prussian, but I was separated from my Krause catalogs and couldn't make out much detail in the pics.

Nice find! Where'd you get it? Was it dug? Do you live in the Northeast? A lot of Polish troops fought on the American side in the Revolutionary War...

Nah, I live in the Chicago area, and it was one of a coin cache that was found after my father died about 11 years ago, just never gone thru before. Some I know have been passed thru the family, how long for I'm not sure, but his mother's side was brought over about 1690 to NY. I've been picking out interesting coins and researching, then printing info and returning it and the coins to the collection for my kids and sister's kids to go thru someday.

So far there's an 1883 Akahi Dala (Kalakaua), two 1986 $50 1 oz gold Eagles, two 1648-55 (or so) Spanish Netherlands Brabant Ducatoon's, the King Louis XVI, an 1808 East India Company XX Cash, a 1839 three legged race from the Isle of Man, tons of Greek coins (nothing older than 1807 or so, tho) chinese cash coins, lots of Mexican, Peruvian, Chilean and Guatamalan silver (none worth much), a mayonaisse jar full of Morgan Dollars, 1942 Fiji penney, 1803 Canadian cent and several from nazi Germany, etc. The gist is that he apparently collected world coins (duh) but nothing of great monetary value. Oh, there's also a bunch of very shiny arabic coins with camel jockeys, but i'm thinking about melting them for scrap, or to cast into .308 reloads.

I did some treasure hunting down at Ft. Campbell in the 80's but there was so much junk, and so little time. I've still got the old metal detector out in the garage, but not many areas around here worth looking at except the old methodist campground. Been there, found lots of old coins but donated them back to the campground.

There's two more bags I need to go thru yet.
