Its not a button what is it?

Found this item this morning mding a spot i found a ct militia button. It had an s on it so I think it's a monagram. I thought it was a button but the back is odd. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Looks like part of a coverall snap button.

I agree that it looks like a early snap button, but I really don't know if that is what it is, I will do some looking around to see if I can find something like it.

Edit: I did some looking around and even the earliest snaps look much like they do today, so not sure what it is.

Looks like a metal hole plug with all the spring fingers bent flat.

Hmm the hole cover is an idea but I don't think so it looks like it was made with tabs bent in. Could it of been attached to a piece of leather?

GpSnoopy has it right... a hole-plug with the spring-fingers bent inward. That happens when one gets stepped on or run-over.

Not so fast, I don't think it's a hole cover, the fingers don't seem bent where they are attached, they would have a crease. Keep up the search.
