It's Brass, but what is it? A fuse i.e. Explosive device?

O.k. maybe I got your attention. Found this critter about 6" deep at one of the local branch libraries here in town this afternoon. Some years ago this was always a good spot for a bit of silver and a few IH's here and there. But none of that today. Just a bunch of clad. This was the first I had been out in about a week+. So what is it? :icon_scratch: I know what it is but thought it would be fun to throw it out to the detectives here on the forum.

I would have to say that is is a thermostat for an automobile engine. There may be an arrow stamped into it showing which way it was installed. Or it may say "front" on one end or the other.

Looks to be a little small for a thermostat (at least for an automobile engine). I'll go with flux capacitor. Yup, flux capacitor for $200 please... ;D

Ok - possibly something "ammo" related?

If you look at the bottom pic you could see there are no outlet ports for the fluid to pass through. It's also photographed next to what looks like his mouse pad and keyboard - that would be the smallest thermostat I've ever seen (at least for an automobile engine). Some pics to peruse...

I do not believe this to be a t-stat or even part of one, it appears rather small when compared
to the grain of the table it sits on.

Please add a new pic that includes a ruler for measurement,

The more i look at it the more i think it`s a part from some type of hydraulic valve, piece of
old valve lifter? (not necessarily automotive, which would be "beefier")

EDIT: Note the spring seat in this pic to get a better idea.
(may have to pull apart a few i have laying in roller cab ;D )

O.K, O.K. Thermostat is correct. On the other side of from the 28 is 1950, Year?
On the side is what looks like a part# and also says on the side Towards Radiator with and arrow. So the very first response was right on the money. I too hought this may be an inline thermostat. Nice guesses alll the way around. Maybe some imagination too, eh? Thanks gang. Had alot of fun with that. ;D
