ACV for a week or so then do some electrolysis to clean it off. It will reveal so much more detail.

If you can send some better closeups. Especilly where you think there is writing.

Looks a little like a lid for a water meter but I would think all those were made of brass.

I took some pictures to show how the oval part looks like a spoon and I'm pointing in the picture to where it looks like letters then in the next picture you can see it a little bit better. Sorry for the bad quality..

cti4sw, could you elaborate for a green horn, what is the cleaning process you speak of? What is ACV? What is electrolysis?

It looks like it belongs on a vintage cast iron stove. I look forward to seeing it after cleaning. :) Breezie

I've been looking for some time, as this design looked somewhat familiar, but just couldn't picture what I was looking for. Your post got me thinking on a different tangent. Not sure if it's from a stove, but I do vaguely remember some type of securing latch that looked like this. A threaded rod would go through or swing into the slot and you'd tighten a tapered nut or wingnut down onto the slotted part, which would secure whatever this bracket was part of. I think some old pressure canners had a similar system, and thinking this could also have come from some type of cast iron lid or possible stove top, hatch cover, etc.????

I agree with GPSnoopy. It looks like an access hole cover of some kind. Maybe for a pilot light on a stove or furnace? Lubrication point on a tractor or engine? Hard to say without more information.

Looking at this, the first thing that came to my mind was a thumb trigger of a WWI Vickers machine gun, but I believe it to be the thumb push of a vintage thumb latch door handle.
