Headed out this morning with the sun shining and temps in the mid 50's - a perfect day to do some detecting at a colonial site that I found last fall. I've detecting this site a couple of times and based on the lack of signals it is obvious that it has been well pounded before I discovered it. Most high tone signals are rose head forged nails which are plentiful at this site. I got a decent high tone on my T2 SE and I dig all high tones at this site even if it is only a one way signal. I flipped out the shovel full of dirt and see a tiny piece of silver and immediately think that it's a cuff link. I wipe away some of the dirt and see the lion with no lettering - flip it over and see what looks like a castle. Since my eyes are getting pretty bad I put it away to inspect when I got home. That pretty much ended my hunt as it was really raining at this point although I was much happier about stopping for the day with a nice early silver in my pocket.

I found a similar coin on ebay ( link below ) and the seller list it as a scarce coin. Not sure if mine is the same or even rare but I couldn't find a lot on it. Any input on the origin or age of this coin would be appreciated.

@ Dan - thanks for the information on the 1/4 Real - very informative. It's pretty crazy that these coins are so rare and you and Bill have both dug one too. The fact that it is your favorite dug colonial coin means pretty much based on all of the awesome coins that you have dug.

@ Abe - I do love detecting early sites with no modern trash. I hunt in 2 tone and just listen for the high tone then dig. I did notice the vdi was in the high 50's - was kind if expecting a .22 bullet before I dug it.

@ Bill - Yes, I had noticed the same thing about all three coins being holed. If you hold this tiny coin in your hand you can understand how easy it would be to lose it. I was worried that I would lose it before I got home and kept checking my pocket to make sure it was there.

big congrats on you. you're in a very unique club with that find; only 2 other members. have to vote banner

That is soooo tiny! Truly awesome find. That's a banner find!

Yes, it came out of the sandy soil looking very good. All I did was rinse it under water. It not for the nail hole in it this would be in excellent condition. You can see some nice toning on the recesses of the coin.

I'm going to vote banner on this coin due to it's scarcity. These are the kinds of things that I believe should have a place up top. It's really a great find bud

Thank everyone for the banner votes. I would be shocked if this made the banner due to the fact that there is little known about this coin. For me it is just as gratifying to get the praise and acknowledgment of what I consider some of the best and most productive relic diggers on the forum. It was exciting to dig this little coin and just as exciting to learn about it.

Congrats on finding that rare little bugger! You are in an exclusive club now!

Sweet find!! That T2 is probably one of the only machines that will pick something like that up!

Oh and I think im gunna vote banner for it too! Thats a rare one and takes flat out skill to find:thumbsup:
