Headed out this morning with the sun shining and temps in the mid 50's - a perfect day to do some detecting at a colonial site that I found last fall. I've detecting this site a couple of times and based on the lack of signals it is obvious that it has been well pounded before I discovered it. Most high tone signals are rose head forged nails which are plentiful at this site. I got a decent high tone on my T2 SE and I dig all high tones at this site even if it is only a one way signal. I flipped out the shovel full of dirt and see a tiny piece of silver and immediately think that it's a cuff link. I wipe away some of the dirt and see the lion with no lettering - flip it over and see what looks like a castle. Since my eyes are getting pretty bad I put it away to inspect when I got home. That pretty much ended my hunt as it was really raining at this point although I was much happier about stopping for the day with a nice early silver in my pocket.

I found a similar coin on ebay ( link below ) and the seller list it as a scarce coin. Not sure if mine is the same or even rare but I couldn't find a lot on it. Any input on the origin or age of this coin would be appreciated.

Wow that's cool, really small huh?

That is an awesome find Ken!! When the colonial coin experts were at my house recently checking out my Lord Baltimore sixpence and many of my other finds they noticed my 1/4 reale and were shocked that I had found one. Apparently they're extremely scarce, and outside of mine and one that my partner Dan dug a couple years ago I've only heard of one other one being recovered. So that is most definitely not your run-of-the-mill Spanish silver. Great find! Here's a pic of mine that was recovered about 8-10 years ago.

I shouldn't have edited my post because I was right! You did find one, but it was back many more years than I realized.

Ya that's awesome. I've only been in tnet a few years and this is the first I can remember seeing. These are the type of things I like seeing on here so congrats.

Thanks for the comments. I didn't expect to get 6 replies in 25 mins.

Bill, I should have guessed that you have dug one :tongue3:. Thanks for the information and confirming that it is a rare find. I'm more motivated now to spend more time at this site.

The fact that only one example is for sale on ebay is a pretty good indicator of scarcity.

Very cool indeed. Would be easy to think of it as a button, cufflink etc, without a date or any legends what-so-ever. Not much room for engraving "extras"

Man oh man oh man...Bill and I were just talking about that coin. It is a rare one for sure...still my favorite colonial coin that I have dug to date...nice find man.

Wow that's a great find that I've never seen. How'd it ring up on the T2...if you even noticed the vdi. That's the beauty of nice old sites, you can just dig all the signals that aren't grunts. Congrats on that one

Very cool, congrats on digging the little silver.

Never seen one before yours. Judging by the experts' comments, you've done really well.

I just noticed that all 3 examples that I've seen (yours, mine and Dan's) are holed. I guess it would have been very easy to lose a coin that small, so they were always sewed into a pocket or inside a coat for safekeeping.
