Hey guys! I don't post alot here, but the friend with whom I was digging today suggested I post this:
We were digging a Confederate camp that seems to be early war. My buddy managed a really sweet Va button. A couple hours later I got a sweet +74 on the MXT. Thinking it was a penny (the sound made it seem like it was about 2" down), I went to digging. There were no house sites in the area, and this was an isolated signal in the middle of some really old hardwoods. I'd dug a couple nails close by also. I got down to 4" and realized this was not the 2" Penny I thought it was gonna be. I kept on going, and at about 6" I turned over this plate. It seems to be a stamp, since everything is spelled backwards. I believe it is made of pewter...not positive, but I think so.
It measures 56mm X 45mm and is 4mm thick (about 2 1/8" X 1 3/4").
On the face is "The Constitution", and near the top it states "Buchanan" and "Breckenridge". Buchanan was our 15th President, and Breckenridge was his Vice Pres.
Any help with ID on this object will be greatly appreciated! So far no one knows what it is, or has ever seen one before!
Thanks for looking!

funny really, it wouldn't sell for more than $5 over here, shows how you guys like your history

Get a REAL appraisal--not from your friend, and not from the guy up the road. Call Christie's and send them photos.

Great find!

Guilty! Don't you find us just adorable? :D

Your point got me thinking though Crusader. We are just infatuated with ourselves. And I don't blame you for thinking it's funny. But I'm not going to stop! :laughing7:

Aint it the truth, when I go to the Flea Market to find antiquities, if its not American, I dont buy it. I only look at American coins, stamps, tools, militaria, fishing lures, buttons, books etc it must be American or American colonial .

I made the point to get people thinking, not in any way to put down the find or the US love for it. Maybe I stated the obivious, but we have so much history that sell for peanuts. I believe the medium point between our cultures would be more appriorate on both sides :icon_profileright:

I seem to be losing posts on this thread! Brambles was gone last night and now it's back..but missing some others now!
Anyhow..i thought someone posted an auction site here that sold a similar plate for $5k or something and they told you to get in touch with them??
Maybe contact "Worthpoint".They auction a lot of good stuff i believe, but find out as much as you can about it beforehand. As the guys have said..you're holding a big chunk of real American history there.Don't do half measured..get it appraised professionally.

There's two threads going on this. This thread was on todays finds, but for some reason moved, so now two are on this forum. It doesn't make much sense to me why it would have been moved. (just confused things)

I didn't take it as a put down at all. I think I took it just as you intended. :icon_thumleft: And it did get me thinking. I am envious of your access to incredible historic finds but it does make it a bit bittersweet when such things are relatively common enough so that they are not as fully appreciated as (IMO) they should be.

We might overdo it a bit here but being I'm a history buff that makes me happy. It inspires me to find one of these Buchanan plates! :hello2: or something...

I'm assuming this is not going to make banner because the poster only has 6 posts? A crying shame. :crybaby2:
