never tracked down by deer flies but I did get picked off a dozen times swimming in a big lake in Minnesota by horse flies...same thing?... every time I came out of the water one would bite my neck, ear or shoulder...it must have been funny to watch me trying to make it the shore...

Yeah i would bet that "deer" and "horse" are both subjected to the same biting arse fly as we are.... so they are prolly one in the same.
