Spanish silver!!! its 1718-1726 minted in cuenca spain based on the assayer jj. Found a 1899 Indian penny and 6 flat buttons and 8 lead bag seals today also. I know it's not anything too special but it's my first Spanish silver and I am happy as can be

Great cut silver

Congrats on your first, good shape to boot.
Would like to see the seals as well, some of those can be very interesting, 8 in one hunt seems like a lot of those, don't think I ever got that many in a year.
OK I got to go dig a few holes myself, but will check back for those seal pics.

Good luck out there.

i will get a pic soon, they were all founs close together and most of them are the same, says berlin on one side

Spanish silver!!! Can anyone give me info on the year it might be and what is that i near the L in Phillip? Found a 1899 Indian penny and 6 flat buttons and 8 lead bag seals today also. I know it's not anything too special but it's my first Spanish silver and I am happy as can be

Excellent cut silver. Good and early. I too would love to see those lead seals. Congrats

I don't know anything about coins, but I'm happy for your triumph. Congratulations!

I felt that feeling a few week ago! It was like my Holy Grail. Congrats! Such a cool find.

Funny you sat that almost all mine are the same or similar from Germany too.

Yeah, I'd be super happy, too!
Must be the year for Spanish silver

Definitely a King Philip V 1/4 of a Pistareen. Dated between 1700-1746, right in line with the Golden Age of Piracy! From 1716-1719 some of the most infamous pirates sailed the seas including Black Beard and Black Sam Bellamy, they or their crew mates may have once owned this piece of treasure you found here! Very cool! :treasurechest::thumbsup:

ok what does pistareen mean? and maybe blackbeard cause he had a house here about 2 miles down the road, and it was still standing when i was a kid, but they tore it down and built a hotel!

Some great detail on that small piece! Congrats!

Congrats on your first Spanish and your first cut piece. When I found my first back in 1990, a 1764 one real, I thought it was a French coin until I looked it up. We didn't have the internet back then :laughing7:

Here is some great information on Pistareens in the American Colonies. http://numismatics.org/wikiuploads/CNL/Pistareens.pdf That cut pistareen is basically a debased real, minted in Spain and only meant to circulate in Spain... but obviously many of them made it to the New World Colonies. A lot of great history in those coins, all of which I learned after digging one. Prior to that, I had no idea what they were. Great find!

I can totally relate to this Steve. I started detecting in 1993 before the internet, and most of what I found, I had no clue what it was. The resources that we have today are just awesome compared to back then. I remember taking two piece buttons over to a friends who had the Alphaeus Albert button book :laughing7:
