I found this horseshoe 4 inches down and found this tool about 4 feet from it, also 4 inches down. Is this tool used to remove the horseshoe from the horse? Just curious what the tool is used for. They are pretty rusted, I did wash them off before i took the pics. The lighter is for sizing. Thank you Mary ann

I don't know what it is but it isn't a shoe removal tool. Way too small. They use a tool that looks like a large pair of pliers that are flat on the end to pull the nails. They look like this-

EDIT- Well, I guess PBK knows what type of tool it is. Good ID PBK.

"alligator" wrench - the type is so-called because of its shape, like an "alligator's mouth" - was used to turn iron and steel pipes and rods which could not be turned with a regular wrench. A pipefitter often used such a tool in fitting or removing air- and water-piping from a locomotive.
