First post.
I live on the outskirts of Atlanta, GA. There is a large wooded area behind where I live, which has never been built on or developed. It is also beside a creek which we know from geological studies is very old. A spear head was found in the creek which was dated to be approximately 3,000 years old. The area is also near where several battles were fought during the Civil war, and it could have been used as a thoroughfare between camps and Stone Mountain, Georgia (which is nearby).
Over the weekend, I was playing with a friend’s metal detector and decided to walk around in the woods. After just a few minutes, I got a hit. After digging about 7 inches I found this piece of lead. As I said, I know there has never been any construction or development in this area. I have lived here 60 years and our home was one of the first in the development.
Someone I know has suggested this could very well be musket ball slag. You can see it in the image and it is about 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. Is there any way to verify what this is from?? Thank you.

PS Do you consider the stuff you find on the beach with a detector as worthy of posting here?

Looks like lead fired from something. Maybe a pass through on a deer, no idea what firearm, old or modern, might have fired it. It doesn't have the white patina that I've seen on old lead.
Yes, beach finds are worthy....most of the time...some is just junk. But a few guys like posting junk. ;o)

Pleading stupid, it might have had a white patina, but I stupidly used an electric wire brush to clean it.

Also, I do not think it was actually "shot", because the back of it is more flat and looks like what you might expect it to look like if it was spilled and landed on the ground

I would say slag. If it hit meat and bone, it did its job.

Show a pic of the back. I've shot many deer with slugs and round balls from a muzzleloader, the impact side is mangled like your lead, the rear end is usually flatter.

I was asked to show the back side of my find.

Now what do you think>
