Is this Brass Lock Plate Old? Have you seen one like it?

I found this Heavy Brass Lock Cover/Plate on Palm Beach Friday 12/29/17. It was deep it the wet-sand among the rocks. Looks like it used an old skeleton key to open it. Have you ever seen one similar to it? I'm wondering how old it might be.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I asked hi how big it was. When he said 2 3/4 of an inch, I talked myself out of the reply. It certainly does look like one, though.
