Is this an old ship ballast?

I live in Soldotna Alaska, several years ago a friend of mine knew I collected rocks and everything else off the beach. He gave me this, he said a friend of his found it off an Island up here, possibly somewhere off the Aluetian chain. I don't believe its an anchor, maybe its a ballast of some kind. It weighs about 40 or 50 pounds, the bottom is flat with rounded edges. No one seems to know, not even our archeologist. DSC05243.JPG

the first thing to come to mind would be a stone for grinding grain etc, but that might not be the case in Alaska unless it was brought there for that purpose , otherwise it might be a stone ground by a glacier and placed there forever ago when it receded
