it appears that piece was turned on a wheel...nice looking piece.

My friend noticed that also. I guess that rules out Indians :( Thank you for the post

Airborne,
Indeed, it does look like a pottery piece. It doesn't, however, look ancient. I agree also that it has been "turned".
My guess is that it may indeed be more consistent with Civil War period (mid 1800s). I find a great deal of pottery in this area that is 1200 to 1450s time frame. It is gray with white pigments/ particles scattered within (this is most likely mussel shell used in the composition). Most of it has a cord or string impression, and, of course, it would have no symmetrical turning or wheel marks.
However, I am no expert and I yield to our more learned friends.

Thanks Doc. Your post is interesting and informative. I really do appreciate it :D I am still a bit excited about this find as its my first pottery shard and the Civil war stuff is pretty interesting. I am going to post a strange item that I found last year that is a clay something. please take a look at that and see what you think. I almost believe that its one half of a shaft stripping device. I will post it now.

Shards are glass. Sherds are crockery, pottery.
Read and remember! Remember "Glass shards" and "pot sherds"

Good to note Tom. This is easily a mistake I would have made, had I not been informed otherwise.
On the same note remember that “mucus” is the noun and “mucous” is the adjective.
