Is this a piece of an Artillery Shell?

I found this near the site of a Major Civil War Battle in WV. My uncle thinks it is a piece of an Artillery Shell. is that what it is? And if so, anyone have any ideas what type?

It is the base part of an exploded Confederate 3"-caliber Read shell. The particular version you found, which has a ring-sabot made of copper, did not exist until very-early 1863, and was used until the end of the war in 1865.

The dating you put on the Shell would put it in the right time frame for the battle. And my uncle had also thought that it was Confederate
