Thank you very much!!

While I don't post here a lot, I do read. IMO this is the most informative forum of its type on the Internet!

Hmmm, now I'm being told that this is a Garrison or overseas hat pin. Visor hat pins were supposedly twice the size of this one, and had a screwback rather than pinback. Any ideas?

Sorry, didn't notice the size. Here is an official statement issued by the U.S. Navy regarding such insignia:

[size=18pt]2.5.4 The United States Navy Officers' Crest
The officers' crest is worn on the Navy officer's cap. A large one is worn on the combination cap—the cap with the black bill and cloth cover, and a smaller one is worn on the left side of the garrison cap.

I have the large one somewhere. I actually found the hat at a dump years ago and removed the insignia. It is much lighter as well with a hollow backside as far as I remember.

Thanks to all for the help!!

I really want to learn how to dig. I went in a farmer's field with a friend and her detector once but just found a few arrowheads on the surface. No diamond rings or anything. :)

Thanks again!!

HI,

A very popular cap badge of British Tanker company, BP Shipping today. Companies often used to assign their own badges.
Merchant Marine Officer dress ups in his uniform, hence I would like to present a better picture of various uniforms in trend in history as well as in modern times.
