thanks for all the ideas.i was diving with a metal detector.in 12' of water it was about 12" in the mud.i also found an old folding knife with a carved bone handle but it didn't last long after it came out of the water.we have found clay pipe stems, musket balls and the brass end of a sword scabbard in the same area.

Laugh if you want to but I think dcoop is pretty close to the truth. All the fish spears and frog gigs I have ever seen were made of nearly fishhook thin spring steel with barbs on ever tine for deep penetration and strength. It looks like some kind of trident decoration more than an actual working tool to me. Monty

We use these to gig fish with in the rivers here in Mo its legal. you go after dark and shine a large light into the water and fish from the boat the gig goes on a long pole and the light shines into the water to light up the bottom when you see the fish you stick him and rake it off the gig in the boat, season ends at midnight. You can only gig rough fish like hog suckers, yellow sucker, red horse, carp and such. its great fun you have a fish fry on the bank, drink beer & deep fry the fish, when you drop the fish in, it goes to the bottom of the grease it sinks when it comes to the top its done. grease dissolves the small bones they're ready to eat you also have to make hush puppies to go with them sit around the fire and tell fish stories and other lies.
