It's just a dimple but a little larger dimple than the one in ironspike's photo. But the front of both are identical

I have another with the same "E" on it my father found but the item is a little larger and a completely different shape. I will try to post a pic ASAP of it.

I did look for the picture before I posted but the valve is very old, heck it was 30 years ago when I worked on them. After that everyone started going to throw aways. I do have this though ¬¬
These are the caps to my salt & pepper shakers. Almost a perfect match for size.

After reading the thread I see that this plain block lettering could be Indian War era but not Civil War. I dont think it could possibly be CW or earlier with such a modern letter E even though most were found in older sites..
