Is this a bullet or something else

Found this at a Union camp site, dug various bullets in the area. This was dug by my girlfriend using an Ace 400 and it rang up like a bullet and appears to be lead, it's also not magnetic, was dug at same depth as other bullets. My friend also dug one but with slightly less patina. Note the rings are somewhat notched. Thanks to all for looking.

Modern black powder wadcutter bullet. .50 cal.

Google "maxi-ball", as Taz says it's modern.

Tax nailed it. A wadcutter is a bullet used more for target practice than hunt though it could be used for that. The "notches" are rifling marks made as the bullet passed down the bore.

Looks exactly like a Thompson Maxi-Ball. Its a modern black powder bullet.
