Hi all, I found a ring while going through some boxes I bought a while back and found a ring. It doesn't look like much but it said 10k inside the ring. While I'm new to the whole garage sale thing, I'm really new to metals. Does 10k have any value or is it almost like being gold plated? Thanks...please don't laugh lol. I really don't much about this stuff.

Could you post a picture? That would help us "estimate" a weight. Include a penny or quarter for size reference

If it is solid 10k gold it is worth roughly 40% of its weight in gold

Gold is at $1370 an ounce so it does not take much to be worth a significant amount

Are there any letters after 10k?

------------------------------------------------
The Percentage of Gold that each represent are as follows

10k (Karat) is 41.66 percent Gold (1024 = 41.66%) aka 416 or 417
14k (Karat) is 58.33 percent Gold (1424 = 58.33%) aka 583 or 585
18k (Karat) is 75.00 percent Gold (1824 = 75.00%) aka 750
24k (Karat) is 100 percent Gold (2424 = 100.00%) aka 999

also
333 ---------------- 8K
375 ---------------- 9K
500 ---------------- 12K
916 or 917 ------ 22K

GE, HGE, GP, EP, = Gold Electroplate
GF, G.F. = Gold Filled

I have also seen PG which equals Plumb Gold and some marked 14kp which is Karat Plumb. Plumb gold is good :)

Sorry guys, I've been at work all day. I'm going to put a picture up of the ring tomorrow .Thanks for all the help thus far.

Hi guys, here is some pictures of the ring I found in the box yesterday. It is only marked 10k and nothing else. I weighed it on my scale and it only weighed 9 grams. I don't know, any insight would be appreciated.

Easy.

Scrap Gold Weight Conversion and Melt Value Calculator

9 grams of 10k is worth $165 in scrap gold. If you find a buyer who pays 90%, take .5k under 10k and deduct 1 gram for the stone and you would get roughly $120 if you sold it to a scrap gold buyer.

Thanks, this was a nice little find in the bottom of a dollar box I bought. I don't know anything about precious metals. I guess it's time to learn since I'm getting into this yardsale hunting thing and reselling. I love this site.

I picked up some kids costume jewelry last week. all are rings marked 925 I added a few more just to make an offer of $1.00 and it was accepted.

Well the rings tested almost 925, I think the are probably 600 - 700 and one of the extras that didn't look like much (it is a yellow metal with white prongs & no stone) tested at 10K AU but only weighs 1.6 gr. Value $29

So even the piddly AU ring will almost fill my gas tank.
