Is it possible to shield a coil

The coil on any metal detector is an inductor. Anything you apply to it, put around it, wrap it with, whatever, will detune it thus essentially stopping it from working properly.

There are a few sites on the web which do a decent job of explaining how a detector operates. That's all good, but unless you have an appreciation for the technology behind them, it's just fluff.

But to answer the question directly.... If it possible to shield a coil so it only detects downward? Yes it is. However, you'd end up with a detector that is too heavy to tote easily, and most assuredly less effective overall, and VERY expensive.

Anyone try the foil idea?

I would ink the foil would cause more problems than anything. First off the signal would bounce back down and there is no way it would bound back evenly, it would be scatters. Think stealthy but on a small scale of a few in he's it would not dissipate the signal it would actually cause multiple signals. The best thing to do would be to absorb the signal which in itself is a problem.

Save the aluminum foil for your hats so thought stealing detectorists cant read your mind and find your secret spots.

I would think what your asking would have been done a long time ago if it was easily accomplished.

You might want to read up on MU-Metal, it has magnetic field absorption properties and is expensive as hell.
