I think it's Lava but I'm curious to learn more about it if there is anything TO learn. For example, is it common to find a piece this big? Is it possible to tell where it came from?
Thanks friends.

It is lava. I have several pieces that large. I love the ways it shapes and forms.

Yes. What you have there is a chunk of scoria. The holes and lines in the material were created as gas escaped from molten lava while the lava rapidly cooled, creating the rock.

There are a few different uses for scoria. Like for use in drainage or as a heat insulator. But the material itself is not rare or valuable.

On my property, here in Idaho, I find quite a bit of scoria pieces ranging from baseball size to car tire size.

Well Met MrLee,

Your piece is very cool. Rare or not I will clean mine up and display it in the house like a piece of art. Thanks for the response and I wish you many good finds!

Well Met allen_idaho,

Thank you for the information, I think that even though it is a common piece I will clean it up and display it in the home as a piece of art.
I wish you many good finds in the future!
