Is it jewelry or what?

I found this last night and have no idea what it could be. It was intact initially but it didn't look like anything when i dug it so i just threw it in my pouch and it ended up broken. 3 of the 7 "links" are still together though and once i cleaned them up a little i discovered they have designs on them. This is one of those things that drives me crazy wondering what it was. Any thoughts? Thanks for looking.
