Found this 2 years ago and had it tested. The guy said maybe >:( what kind of answer is that.I can read Elgin National U.S.A. Seven Jewels on it but no serial numbers. The outside looks plated but the body looks real. The inside still has some rusted parts in it and the part that reads Elgin is not gold. ???

Normally a 7 jewel watch was the bottom of the line for just about any watch maker. Elgin included. What you have is a gold filled watch case, which probably has the equivalent of 3 to 5 kt. Low gold content..all gold is mixed with a harding metal. The higher the kt. the purer the gold content. 10-k...12-k...14k..18-k..24k.

No gold that I can see, you might have a plated watch. Rust won't stick to alloyed 10k gold and up.

Plated pieces will test positive for gold, because they have a gold covering. Most acid test say to file a notch into the item being tested and then use that area on the touch stone. Or apply the acid directly to the filed area. After one handles gold enough, they pass on the filing unless the item looks fishy.
