IRONIC?

Finally, a legitimate target for drones, lol

Some of the impacts associated with gold mining include land degradation, destruction of vegetation and pollution of aquatic environments. With regards to gold mining in Datuku in the Upper East region of Ghana, gold bearing ore is ground thoroughly and mixed with mercury to form an amalgam. The gold amalgam is roasted to release mercury and to concentrate the gold. Excess mercury in the mine tailings is discarded onto the environment which ends up in water bodies through run off. Methylmercury in water and mercury oxides in air that result from gold amalgam finds itself in humans through inhalation or ingestion of water or mercury-contaminated fish or food [12]. Weathering of rocks and heaped waste materials in mining sites also result in the release of toxic chemicals into the environment especially, into aquatic bodies [3]. The discovery of gold in the Talensi traditional area in the early 1990s has affected gender and other social relations in many communities including Datuku in the Talensi-Nabdam District [13] though, small scale gold-mining provide thousands of indigenous peoples with employment and making important contributions to foreign exchange earnings. Other ills observed in the community since the inception of small scale mining activities are rapid lost of farm lands, water In the study area, mining results in heaping of rocks and mine waste around trees. Silting of rivers and streams is also evident. Contaminations of surface and ground water bodies have particularly been experienced in gold mining communities in Ghana [6]. Heavy metals that can be leached from waste rocks into water bodies include arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) [14]. Literature sources point to the fact that most cognitive impairments especially in children is due to the presence of elevated levels of trace metals such as mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in the environment.

It's too bad you used so many big words we can't understand. I couldn't find the point of the whole ramblings.

I read that article on the pot farming in sensitive areas the other night and the destruction of the water sheds. They're reasoning was that it was to "dangerous" to try to fine and control the pot growers and that it was easier for them to just fine the legitimate industries. That is just crazy.

That was a first-rate assessment of uncontrolled mining in Ghana. Kudos to the authors. What needs to happen next in Ghana is a set of regulations and maybe
a permit system for the miners to ensure that public and environmental health is no longer jeopardized. EXACTLY WHAT HAS BEEN IN PLACE FOR 25 YEARS IN
CALIF.

Please remember when in Ghana don't drink the water!

..."small scale mining provides thousands of indigenous peoples with employment..."

I used to dream of becoming indigenous, now I are one. 8-)

You just have to keep digging yourself a hole don't you? Why do you think people like me are pushing for more mining here where we can use the environmental controls we have in place? Eliminate mining here and this is what you end up with.

Oddly there is an Arsenic, Lead, Mercury, Uranium, and Radium Issue with the water here in albuquerque...IT's Leaching out of the Ground !! odd mother nature does it too. I'm not saying that mines shouldnt clean up (AKA MOLYCORP) but I dont believe that my mine (carefully planned out , plant new trees and Native grasses to keep the soil erosion down . I don't process on site, and I build dykes to hold all tailings) Is going to do anything to the Watershed (we receive 2.6" of water a year , and last year it was .38 inches) even if we had one. Eyesore?? nope.. even while you walk up on it its well maintained.. and people don't even notice me. I think People want to Control their Enviro way more than they can. and to that I add To ALL whom want to "Stop Dredging" or put a halt to prospecting, or blame us small scale miners for the past 1500 years of mining (yes in NM we've had our share for over 1500 years) and raise new laws, Well stop using your electricity and driving your prius, weeding your garden, picking out non native plants for your topiary, quit eating the greens (they absorb the CO2) Eat a cow, walk everywhere, and Put back the carbon Cap Laws! The fact that the Earth is warming is going to make for a much worse problem than the 2 tons of earth i moved last year, The Precious "Pristine" lands your wanting to protect are about to go thru a Megalithic change, and were all going to be in for the ride..And when i have gold to trade and your sitting with your paper which one of us is going to have a nice beer at the end of time as we know it?
Ye I agree Use the LAWS we have! and Go Attack something that will make a difference.

Ya beat me to it. I had to lay off last night as I was getting more than a little irritated at the lack of common sense flying around in this thread.

A major problem with all the reports on how bad mining is, is the fact that very, very few of them even attempt to establish a base line on the background levels of these "pollutants" that are already there.

Where does hard water come from? And how did those minerals get in the water in the first place?

I have already proven this in another arena. The eco's claim all the petroleum based contaminants in the Sierras area result of OHV's. Can't be anything else, it has to be from OHV's. Too bad they forgot about all the shale oil deposits throughout the Rockies.
