loop at one end and has a decisive curve to it. Not sure if it was made that way or bent during use. It was rusty when found & has been through electrolysis.

Does look old, and looks flatten on the opposite end of the hook. A hand forged utensil , as per Tony fits the bill IMO.

Probably 18th century? The interesting thing about this piece is that I found it on the lot where our house is about to be built. I also found two round balls & a flat button on the lot, as well as a brass men's ring on the lot next to it.

Well for your sake I hope there's no uneasy ghost or unmarked graves on that plot of land. You may what to have a medicine man come and put any restless spirits at ease over your grand plans. :dontknow: but I wouldn't be surprised these days if you'd find some "do it yourself" medicine man kits online if you want to save some money.

I wonder if the other end had a loop which broke off. Then this could be used to hang a pot over a fire.

bulrush you are spot on. I took it to an archaeologist I know at the University of South Carolina & he said it is part of the handle for a pot or kettle. Solved! thanks for the input everyone.
