It was great to get out digging again with Iron Patch yesterday. We have detecting together for over a dozen years together and have discovered many colonial sites in our area. Over the past couple of years I have been dedicating a lot of my time to personal and professional endeavours, but now I can give some spare time back to relic hunting, and getting back on the land making some more awesome discoveries as part of Team Iron Bros.!
There have been some really great sites that we just can't seem to stay away from and have go back time and time again; although it's always better after a ploughing or two and we didn't have many opportunities to get back to some these sites in a couple of seasons, we were due to hit some of our favourites this time.
We were fortunate to have great conditions at a couple of our sites and put a few goodies in the pouch.
Literally, my first good signal was a very early militia button. Ironic (and also from some other recent posts by IP,Patriot, andHunthicks, and a few others) that we discussed finding one of these buttons just moments before, and then there it was!
I also found a couple of other nice old military buttons as well, an RSLA button which is one we find at more than a couple of our sites, and a new one for me. I don't know this one and hopefully we can nail it down in an id. It's a flat one piece construction, about 21-22mm, has a crown atop a thistle in a wreath and AF below, I'm guessing a Scottish militia unit brought over by a new settler around 1800-1820. It was once silvered and came out in as is condition, funny thing was I didn't even realize I found it til I got home and went through my finds. I also found a handfull of other plain buttons from the era and few nitnoids as well. One find ,I believe, is part of a sword hand guard, but could just as easily be a piece of a furniture drawer pull or escution.
I did manage a few coins, but condition was fair at best. A George ll farthing and half pence, a George lll Hibernia half penny, a Tiffin toke ( Kirks favourite!) and an ole crunchie copper for the jar!
All in all it was a great day and I think we'll get a few more chances to get a few more posts up this fall
and now for the pics
