It was great to get out digging again with Iron Patch yesterday. We have detecting together for over a dozen years together and have discovered many colonial sites in our area. Over the past couple of years I have been dedicating a lot of my time to personal and professional endeavours, but now I can give some spare time back to relic hunting, and getting back on the land making some more awesome discoveries as part of Team Iron Bros.!
There have been some really great sites that we just can't seem to stay away from and have go back time and time again; although it's always better after a ploughing or two and we didn't have many opportunities to get back to some these sites in a couple of seasons, we were due to hit some of our favourites this time.
We were fortunate to have great conditions at a couple of our sites and put a few goodies in the pouch.
Literally, my first good signal was a very early militia button. Ironic (and also from some other recent posts by IP,Patriot, andHunthicks, and a few others) that we discussed finding one of these buttons just moments before, and then there it was!
I also found a couple of other nice old military buttons as well, an RSLA button which is one we find at more than a couple of our sites, and a new one for me. I don't know this one and hopefully we can nail it down in an id. It's a flat one piece construction, about 21-22mm, has a crown atop a thistle in a wreath and AF below, I'm guessing a Scottish militia unit brought over by a new settler around 1800-1820. It was once silvered and came out in as is condition, funny thing was I didn't even realize I found it til I got home and went through my finds. I also found a handfull of other plain buttons from the era and few nitnoids as well. One find ,I believe, is part of a sword hand guard, but could just as easily be a piece of a furniture drawer pull or escution.
I did manage a few coins, but condition was fair at best. A George ll farthing and half pence, a George lll Hibernia half penny, a Tiffin toke ( Kirks favourite!) and an ole crunchie copper for the jar!
All in all it was a great day and I think we'll get a few more chances to get a few more posts up this fall
and now for the pics

Something new is a day maker for sure. No doubt it's going to be early 1800s British.... A_____ Fencibles. As luck would have it I just seen a little earlier I have an email from my main UK button ID guy so shouldn't be a problem getting the answer.

Kirk... the great Satan of detecting. :laughing7:

Looks like a great hunt had by both! I'm admittedly still a rube and can't make out the early militia button...what is it?

no coffee, just creme!

A very good hunt, and some dandy military buttons. I think scottish is very logical.
Good (or great) old sites are certainly worth revisiting. This just proves it.
Got at least a month, and with luck 2 more before the ground gets hard, so no doubt there will be more to see from the iron bros.

Speaking of the plow, one of my better places will have that happen sometime before next spring. (great anticipation smiley)

Sorry should have mentioned that part
script is: Militia- across the top
Island St.Johns across the bottom

Having Island St.Johns should help date it ?

Forgot to mention the coins, a 5 copper day is pretty respectable, not to mention the farthing, at least in my experience they are quite scarce indeed. I've got 2 only (idable) that's in 6 years. Curious...how about you ?

Hmmm, although I would say that farthings are fairly scarce I have found a few, but only in the say 10-12 range

Wow is all I can say .I guess I need to start looking for some new sites.Been a long time since I have found anything of note.

You guys rock. No doubt most of us would consider many of your daily finds as among our lifetime best. Congrats.:icon_thumleft:

That's some crazy digging going on there. Really nice score on the buttons and the coins.:notworthy:
ZDD

I'm still drooling over those finds and the walking steak in the background...Man you guys turn up some nice early buttons there...Hope my luck changes for the remainder of the year and get a button or two...or even like hunthicks, a gold coin or early cob...not asking for much lol... All jokes aside, that was a great hunt and good to see you guys out tearing up the fields again...

I'd hold out with a dinner fork, and knife, as far as gold coins, I don't know...you might get hungry ?
