Well,.Sometimes ?
Hi All ,.. Last Sunday [3-3-13] the History channal aired it's new series "VIKINGS" ,. and I beleive its going to be a great series at that !
Anyway ,. in this first epesode the lead / key viking ,. believe his name is Ole[?] shows his brother [Sven?] a piece of "sun-stone" ,. which he believes could be used to help them navigate in open water . This mere 4 sec blip of this "sun-stone'" is for sure a taste of things to come ,. for these wayward Vikings !!
Ole's "sun-stone" is what I believe to be ,. Iolite ,.. A.K.A. ,. Water Sapphire ,. Cordierite[mineralogy] and the Viking Compass Stone . Iolite has a unique property of letting light pass through it's crystalline structure in one direction only ,. but turn the stone the light is scattared ,. giving the stone it's blue- violet color . It's this property the vikings found useful ,.. even on gray overcast days ,. when you can't see where the sun is at in the sky ,.. Iolite will only let direct light pass [polarization ?] ,. revealing the location of the sun . And if your a boy scout ,.. or a viking ,.. supose you can do somthing with that ??
Now ,. in two of the pic's here I'm try'n to show this color change of clear to purple with a piece of uncut iolite ,.. hope ya'll can see it ? Funny thing ,. for the life of me I coudn't get the cut stones to do it ,. must have somthing to do with the magic of a well cut stone ?? And there's only a few with the magic to cut iolite ,. as I was told anyway ,,.?
These 3 cut stones were given /my take for help'n with location of deposit . I didn't find the one stone that these where cut from ,. that one stone was about 3 Kilo and was sent off to be cut ,. it held about 20,000 Aus. $ [30,000 U.S. $ ] at the time '76-'77 ?
Anyway ,.. there you go ,. ya'll should watch this new series Vikings ,. some great cheractors ,. Ole,. Sven,. Ole's wife Lina ,. she's very hot !!,. and theres that crazy swede,. "Lars the tree hugger" ,. He has "Issues", .

Swing'n a sword ,.or a detector what ever gets ya the GOLD ,. tis all good ,.. Blindpig

I am reserving judgement on this show. Seemed a little HBO for history channel, but I didn't get to finish it. I did like the fact they introduced the sun stone along with the other viking tech. It would be nice if they don't "hollywood" the show too much.
Your Iolite is beautiful! Did you find it in the states? or did I just miss where you found it?

Hi Mamabear ,. I found this iolite in N.T. Australia ,. I was about 13-14 yr's old ,. had a strong set of legs so often was sent "up there" , have a look,.. hay ,run down there bring back a piece of that ??. It really was a bit of fun !!
also believe , iolite is the state of California gem stone ,. ? I think,.?

Actually Iolite shows pleocroism, different colours down different crystal axises, except for the "C" axis.
All axises but the "C" axis can polirize light, but it requires 2 "filters". (pieces) The same, though, can be said for many other gems.

The secret to a well cut iolite is orientation. One needs to orient the "blue" colour upwards towards the table.

So EU ,. it's not magic !! ,. but science ?? ,.. now this ,shifts the orientation of the axises which upon my world spins !!

Blindpig and amishboy,

Actually you both are right. History has suggest that the "sunstone" was either iolite or calcite.

Respectfully Submitted,

:) "Knowing" how to do it in theory and really doing it in person are 2 very different things. :)

Of course that crystal was found on board an Elizabethan ship. I quote from above mentioned article:
"No such crystals have been found yet at Viking sites. The team notes that archaeologists are unlikely to find complete crystals as part of a group of grave goods, since the Vikings often cremated their dead."
