Good Evening Everyone,

I'd like to introduce myself, I'm "tallguybry" (or TGB) for short. I hail from the beautiful state of South Carolina.

I recently stumbled upon the CRH forum and (with my Wife's blessings) have decided to become a CRH!

I made a trip to our local bank and talked to the Lead Teller. I explained what I was looking to do. She smiled and said "you're not the first person to tell me this". I asked about ordering $500 boxes of halves and how to "dump" them. She explained the first thing I should do is open a "business account". This way I can bring back $1000 in halves in an approved bank bag (and she said it wont throw up any red flags at the corporate office).

Here is my plan. The business account will be strictly used for CRH. I'll pickup my first $1000 next week and order my next $1000. I'll return my first $1000 when I go to pick up my second $1000. The process repeats each week. I will start at our branch. If the "skunks are running wild", I'll change branches.

I know I am looking for the pre-'64 halves, the 40%'ers, the "no FG" errors (1966-P, 1972-D, 1982-P, 1983-P plus maybe others), 1976-S, silver NIFC's and...

What else am I forgetting?

Best of luck all!
TGB

Welcome, Hope you do well. That's amazing they are gonna order for you and let you dump at the same time. Sounds like a great arrangement.

You definitely should also look into sourcing at a different bank as well. It is not a hard a fast rule to not dump into the same pool of coin that you order from, but it does increase the chances that you might be spinning your wheels at times looking at primarily the coins you dumped 2wk ago.

Give it a whirl though. There is no better way to dump than coin lock bags.

I see your point. I plan on putting a small black mark with a permanent marker on the edge (under the date) of all coins that I toss back. This way, I'll know if I am "spinning my wheels".

As for finding another source, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Do not waste your time marking. If you stick with it , you will find some silver. good luck and happy hunting.

Personally, I wouldn't buy and dump at the same branch. I'd find a different branch to dump.

Again, personally, IMO, I don't think that relationship where you buy and dump at the same branch is going to last very long. You might get a few months out of it, or maybe even a year...but eventually, they will tire of the added work you are placing on them, and cut you off completely.

Spread out the work a bit. Buy at one branch, dump at another.

Welcome to the party!

Pardon me for preaching but it's a bad idea to use business account for CRH. Business account is going to cost you way too much. The fee for a business account is factored every month by some strange formula and the fee could be as high as 3% of your total "coin transaction", which include what you dump and buy. It is not a huge amount for a real business but CRHers go through way more coins than any legit business. Listen to others, do not buy and dump at the same branch.

Try ask around other branches or other banks and please don't tell them that you are looking for silver, just say that you are a collector and collecting any collectable coins.

welcome to the club man hope to see some reports on finds soon!

other things you will looking for are cud coins. magicians coins and the occasional 8real! just kiddin on the last one but really things you can find are crazy. i've seen people pull british one penny coins out along with some really mangled coins. if you really get into it and don't just do silver. you'll have some really nice coins in your collection after a short amount of time!

good luck man!

Welcome TGB, Wish you the best of luck and will be watching for your post.

Welcome to the forum! Be prepared for lots of frustration with the occasional high.

I would not recommend marking every coin that you dump or you will spend more time marking than searching. I would, however, recommend marking some coins - at least when you start out. I think that dumping where you pick up will just end up in you getting the same coins over and over again and marking will prove that out very quickly. Your best bet will be to get your coins from a different bank then from where you dump.

If you do mark, please make a point to mark only worn or previously marked coins. This way nice condition coins will still stay nice for the next collector down the line who may be looking for that coin. The first 2003-P I ever found was in BU condition, but some idiot marked it. It took me two more months to find another one that was unmarked.

Happy Hunting!

welcome to CRHing.

heres my 2 cents.

1. It's ok to buy and dump at the same "chain of banks" but I would seperate them have 1 for pickup 1 for dumping, if you start doing enough volume they will get sick of you real quick + the branch manager will notice the increase in service fees really quickly.

2. Marking coins is an exercise in futility , i.e. a complete and utter waste of time. Either you're finding silver or you are getting skunks, marking coins will not help you in the slightest bit.

3. Have fun and don't expect to much , because when you find the "vein" it really is a lot of fun!

4. Business account is not necessary, in fact it exposes you to more fees than a personnel account. I would only make a business account if you actually had some kind of corp or LLC.

HH and Good Luck!

Welcome to the insanity!

It's cool that your wife gives you her blessing, mine thinks I'm crazy. Even when I get a nice score or sell Ikes at a profit, she could care less or share in my enthusiasm.

I'd definitely recommend not marking coins, there might be some kid that needs a coin that you fouled up to finish a book. One mans trash is anothers treasure no?

Lastly, I'd never dump at the same bank I pick up from, just cuz I don't want to eventually end up getting my coins back. I pick up strings boxes & dump at brinks.

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback guys and for the warm welcome!

As for the Business Account, I was told there are no fees involved if I transfer $100 or more to my Business Savings account once a month. After the $100 goes to Savings, I just transfer it back to the checking.
