It's from India. Around the turn of the century. Here's the coin that it copies.

This coin is actually a Penny from Great Britain, and it was used as currency in New Zealand ( I have found a few of them) until NZ had its own minted.
Cheers

Your whatzit is more likely a charm from a charm bracelet, made to look like a British gold sovereign.? Most of the charms I have seen are copies of George V sovereigns or half-sovereigns.

This is much more likely the coin that your charm is (rather crudely) imitating.

Does the reverse have St. George and the Dragon?

The coin that DigEmAll posted is a British penny, a bronze coin (and not from India, though India was part of the British Empire then).? It was from the same king, though: George V. (Who reigned 1910-1936).

Usually the charm bracelet charms resemble gold coins, and most that I have seen imitate gold sovereigns, though I have seen some that mimic sixpence and other coins.

"GEORGVIS V DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX FID DEF IND IMP"?
The FID is only found on the penny and half penny.

I was half wrong in saying that it was from India.? It is a coin of Great Britain that was used in India... among other places.? Which means that it COULD be from India!? LOL? ;D ;D ;D? Ok, ok... enough of my splitting hairs! ::)

Here is the exact ID that I was given for my coin.
"It is a bronze one penny coin from Great Britain. That's King George V on the obverse and Brittania on the reverse. Mintage was 50,820,997 in 1914."

Therefore, I have absolutely no excuse for my stupidity. :-[ Please excuse me, I have to go see how gun metal tastes. :'(

If you happen to be curious, the translation of the above means:? "George the Fifth (GEORGVIS V), by the Grace of God (DEI GRA), King of all the Britons (BRITT OMN REX), Defender of the Faith (FID DEF), Emperor of India (IND IMP)"
