My guess would be ONYX for the black stone...and unsure about the hallmark. But I think it is Sterling silver...

I think the ring might have been put under some sort of flame or extreme heat... which might account for the black look of the stone? Maybe? Just a thought...

Exactly what I was going to say, looks like it got tossed in a fire. Or at least the front part with the "stone" was exposed to something hot.

Any way you can gently scrape off the soot?

P.S. In your first picture it looks like a lot of long striations are scratched inside the ring. Maybe this ring was placed over something which scratched it a lot and it was used to push or poke something in a fire.

Are we all assuming it's black or did the heat do something to the stone?

Or the glass or whatever it is.

I don't think it's that old.... silver with onyx, copy right mark tells me.. it is is modern.
