I kept getting these high 95 to 99 readings around this old hand dug well. My iron descrim was at maximum as there was lots of old trash around. But, I keep hearing this ding ding ding and of course curiosity got to me.

So I dug, and dug...and dug. The AT-Pro was going nuts like I'd hit a slot machine when my shovel hit something solid. I was down around 16 inches or so. The soil changed to a course sand from the organic loam. When I started removing things I found more. Heavy, hmmm.

Looked like hot rocks at first. So I decide to break one open to be sure. The little one was kind of triangular and the heavy one was squarish. I clash them together a few times and the little one splits open.

At first I saw a skeleton key then, no it was flat. An old hinge maybe with 100 years of oxidation. It was deep.

I'll crack open the heavy one today. It still gives a high signal.

Any thoughts on what I have? Keep lookin'.

often there was a well house around wells. At least by me there was, not sure about in Texas . So looks like a hinge to me and might be from an enclosure around the well at some point?

Baffles me. Hot rock was my first thought - but with that streak in the 4th and 5th photos - don't know. Be interested to hear the answer.

Deep could be explained because there's a hole right next to it and the dirt that came out of that hole went somewhere.

Alternatively there might have been posts on other side of the well and something could have been dropped in a post hole.

its not worth anything so put it in a vise put a wire wheel on a drill and take it down to bare metal. At least that's what i do with old iron stuff.

Good ideas. I like the idea of brushing it down to what's left of any metal. I've owned this property for 15 yrs now and often wondered if anything was around the old well. It looks like I might need to take the box blade and scrape away 8 inches at a time. The original well was dug in the 1800's and this ceramic extension may be 75 yrs old or so. The whole bottom floods at times so I guess the typical wooden well houses never lasted long. There very well may be old posts and such down deeper. Thanks to TNet for inspiring me to look under my own feet for treasure. And magnet hunting too oh my. I'll post any finds. Thanks guys.
