There is a bank in my area with a free coin counter. I have known about the magnet on the machine but never bothered to ask about it. One day last month, I asked what happens with all foreign coins that go through the machine(I collect foreign)...
The teller says the magnetic coins get stuck to a magnet. I asked where the magnet was out of curiosity, the teller points out that it is below the metal bin where the coins slide through.
Since I dump once, maybe twice a week, he tells me next time I dump there, pull out the metal bin that the coins slide down to be counted and dump straight into the hole Saves me a lot of time!!
Anyway, back to the story. I ask if there was anything interesting on the magnet. The teller, he lifts it up and there is a big bunch of coins stuck to it. He is removing the coins from the magnet and I tell him the countries the coins are from and that I collect foreign.
He's a slick guy, collects silver coins as well. We have conversations when I am dumping, and he is always friendly.
I ask if I could buy the coins off the machine, but he said he can't do that and they have to throw the coins in the trash
I ask that if he throws the coins in the trash if he could save them for me since I save foreign coins. I guess he indirectly said yes by giving me what is off the coin machine which made me happy and I thanked him a lot.
Going through the change now, it contains the following:
Caymen Islands:
1996 5c
2002 5c
2002 5c
1992 10c
1996 10c
1996 10c
1996 10c
1999 10c
1999 10c
1999 10c
1996 25c
Euro:
1 eurocent, 2002- Germany
5 eurocent 2002- Italy
Canada:
2008 1c
Phillipines:
2004 1 piso
Also found a non-metallic Great Brittain 5 pence from 1990 in the reject bin with a few pennies and a couple nickels which I did not put in the machine as I was only dumping half dollars and dimes.
And possibly the best find of them all, he say it and said I could keep it... 1943 USA steel penny. The second one he's given me in the course of 1 month.
Gotta love it when tellers save coins for you! Foreign or not, the bank has to throw the coins away, why not give them to someone who appreciates the coins! Someone is getting sweets or some goodie next time.
Thanks for reading, HH all!
