Got to hunt a new permission today, a house built in the 1740’s. Found this interesting piece that came out of the ground in two parts and looks to be made of lead or pewter. The half with the writing and animal has a loop at the top that’s been smashed, but it looks like it could be worn around the neck. It also has a date at the bottom that looks like - -45. Any thoughts as to what this is? Thanks!

Might be better to stick with one thread only. As posted on the other thread with the same find, it appears to be a lead bale seal - which also makes sense for a house from the 1740's.

Perhaps the mods should merge threads?

Cool find, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Thanks for your thoughts on the piece. I put it in today’s finds and what is it, hoping to get attention on it in both places, but if the moderators take one down I’m fine with that. This is a todays find though.

It looks like it’s definitely a bale seal from Rochdale England. Thanks!

Lead bale seals are such wonderful finds! They help us to better, and more specifically, understand the trade that took place at the time. Beautiful condition too! Congrats again.

I got something right? Prepare for the end of the world!

Lead Cloth Seal with a lamb on it, so most likely wool.

PS. didn't read your ID, before posting the above. It's actually the biggest Cloth Seal I have seen & one of the nicest!

Thank you Crusader! Do you think the early date accounts for its size?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and nominate this find for banner. I recognize that our biases influence our banner nominations and admit that I have always loved lead seals. They are among my more memorable and enjoyable finds. I haven't before seen one dug from Rochdale. This one is both unusually large and attractive and informs us about 18th c. trade, with further research possible.

Nope, I've had much older medieval ones which are consistant through the ages to the modern ones.

Interesting, to what do you attribute this large size?

Thank you Megalodon, I appreciate your comments and your nomination.

Thanks for sharing this historically important find with us. An item does not have to have high monetary value to be worthy of banner. For me, the history and the opportunity for further research is more important.

As the only one that size that I have seen I can't attribute it to anything, as I have nothing to compare it to.

If I were you I would contact the British Museum & maybe ask this expert (as they don't have an example);

It maybe the only one known or one of just a hand-ful!
