hello to everyone! ;D
I am wanting to do a little research on coin collecting and have seen on posts that the RedBook has been mentioned a few times. I am new to coin collecting,is this a good start to read, or are there any other books that would be better for a newbie to read. Also, where to look for coins, besides pocket change?Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The Redbook is a good reference book for coins, giving a brief history and current retail prices. Check www.coinworld.com for up-to-date info. One thing to keep in mind, if you see the same book or device or whatever mentioned by various members of TNet, you can bet its the best there is.

As far as finding coins, that is only limited by your imagination. Where do you find coins? Banks, casinos, vending machines, etc.

I'd tell you where to find good coins, but that's a secret! You'll learn as you keep an eye out for them ;D Just start getting crafty about it.

You can also find coins for sale in places you wouldn't think, like antique stores, etc. Don't worry though, these people usually know what the coins are worth.

Most important is knowledge, books magazines, coin clubs. Know as much as you can about what you are interested in. Go to coin shows and good dealers, join a club. Avoid those coin shopping shows on tv, they are way overpriced [or watch them to see what not to pay for coins]. I enjoy Coin World and Numismatic News, weekly papers, that way you always have up to date information. Most importantly, enjoy! Numismatics is a great hobby.

A great site that I use as a reference is "american heritage auctions", they are on-line and generally keep their prices updated. You have to get a membership to their site, but it's a free sign-on, so why not ??
