I found what appears to be a collar bar pin from an officers uniform. Approximately 1” x 1/2” and is plated (not solid silver). Can anyone verify if this is a bar pin and approximate age?

It's a First Lieutenants bar, that style pin on the back will date it pre-1942

Thank you for the information. Can you provide a reference where I can learn more about this?

A good site for US Militaria is the US Militaria site. Free to join and tons of information. While the date manufactured can predate WWII, if it was still in the supply system it was issued until the old stock was depleted. So it could have been issued years after the phase in of the new style clutch back insignia.
